The Emergency Room is the largest emergency room in the Braunschweig region. Gynecological emergencies are treated at the Celler Straße location. For all other medical emergencies, the Emergency Room is the right place to go. The Central Emergency Room moved to new premises in 2011 and now has 34 treatment stations.
What determines the order in which patients are treated?
In times when several patients need to be treated at the same time, this can often lead to longer waiting times. This situation is exacerbated by the fact that more and more patients are not going to a general practitioner or the emergency practice of the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians first, but instead see the emergency room as the first point of contact for any medical concerns. To ensure that even in times of high demand, those patients who actually need help as quickly as possible are given priority, the central emergency room at the Salzdahlumer Straße site introduced a filter system for initial assessment in 2014.
Specially trained nursing staff classify emergency patients according to the severity of their illness or injury as soon as they arrive, regardless of their area of expertise. Level 1 includes patients in acute danger of death and therefore with the highest priority; level 2 patients must be examined by a doctor within ten minutes; and less urgent cases are classified as levels three to five.
This filtering system does not reduce waiting times. However, registration gives patients greater peace of mind, as they know that their condition will be treated with the necessary medical urgency, even if they have to wait longer. Based on the positive experiences, the trauma surgery emergency room has now also introduced the triage system.
What is the procedure in an emergency?
Patients who are admitted and require the assistance of the central emergency room are examined and given initial treatment by well-trained staff. Alongside the initial treatment, specially trained nursing staff classify emergency patients according to the severity of their illness or injury using the procedure described above. After a medical examination, a decision is made about further inpatient or outpatient care.
Where do I register for a planned procedure?
For patients with planned examinations and procedures (elective), the admissions coordination department of the respective clinic or the corresponding secretariat of the respective clinic is responsible. In addition to the internal medicine disciplines, specialists from the fields of surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, urology, and cardiac-thoracic-vascular surgery complement the comprehensive care provided.
